HitMaker Music School: Press Release – March, 2020

512-549-2454

info@leandermusicschool.com

Cedar Park / Leander’s top music school turns on a dime to offer students LIVE online music lessons, amid crisis.

HitMaker Music School has made a split decision to shift to LIVE online music lessons following stay at home protocol. This quick decision and execution has allowed HitMaker to continue to provide private music lessons and keep the school’s teachers employed. As a matter of fact, HitMaker is adding new students. “We are very impressed by our instructors’ commitment and by our students’ commitment and loyalty,” says owner Mike Irene. “Our focus has always been on customized lessons for each individual,” he continues, “but today, we have a special obligation to our students to help them retain as much of normal life as possible.” But you may be asking, what is normal about taking live online lessons? Well, it’s been happening for years. Irene says, “My alma mater (Berklee College of Music, MA) has been giving online lessons and classes for a while now and that’s a big business. It’s not business as usual at the moment but you can be sure that we will continue to add instructors and students every week, regardless.” So, LIVE online music lessons it isn’t really a new idea yet,  HitMaker is a brick and mortar business that currently welcomes 250 students to on premise lessons weekly. “If we could do live online lessons all the time we could save a fortune in rent, ha-ha.” But that’s not the plan. Actually, HitMaker is building its own permanent home on E Crystal Falls Pkwy in Leander, right now. The new HitMaker Music School building will be almost 1900 square feet with 9 lesson rooms and a group ensemble room. Capacity will allow for 540 + music students weekly with 30 + instructors. The building will have acoustic treatment, a large lobby, and a window in every room. Mike says, “it is an absolute honor to be able to employ musicians who have a passion for teaching. That was me 15-20 years ago and now I get to help others! Wow.”

Today, Live online music lessons have been an amazing success for HitMaker as evidenced by this testimony from a happy student and family:

“I just wanted to send you this quick snap from Anna Grace’a first virtual lesson. I know this has such a crazy time for everyone – so I hope this will be a little smile in your inbox. As you know, Will and Anna Grace have piano lessons at the at the same time, so we had two pianos rocking at the same time in our house. It certainly was a change, as most everything right now, but look at the result!

Anna Grace and Will both had terrific lessons with Angela and Harold, and I am so thankful not to lose their forward progress. We appreciate all that you are doing to bring these wonderful teachers into our home.

My husband and I had such a precious moment where we stopped and just smiled at each other, and then we sat down on our stairs and listened to the music together. It was a really special moment for our family.”

Thanks,

Lauren A.

Irene explains that, ”The relationship that is developed between instructor and student offers a meaningful and positive, life-long influence on our young students’ lives and can alter the path of our older, adult students lives. That’s why we turned on dime to keep it going.”

HitMaker Music School in Cedar Park has been in business since 2013 providing private music lessons to students ages 5 to 95.

Students come from Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, Liberty Hill, Georgetown, Round Rock and surrounding areas. HitMaker Music School was founded by Mike Irene, B.M. (Berklee College of Music – 1993), in 2013. “We named the school HitMaker because we want to teach our students how to be a Hit in Music and in Life,” When our students rise to the challenge of practicing for a recital or a test, they gain something that can’t be taught. Something that can’t be faked. Self-esteem and confidence to take on the challenges of life today and in the future.

“Mom, I wanna be a YouTuber / Gamer / Football Star / Dancer!”  If your kids are anywhere between 8 & 18 you may be hearing these phrases daily.  Of course, when we see our friends and even strangers on media doing things that look cool, we want to do them.  We wish we were good at the same things.  Maybe we’re a little jealous that others are more crafty/clever/talented/gifted/funny/pretty/smarter than us.  As a parent, I want my kids to have the chance to try new things.  To seek for an activity that gives them pure joy.  Sometimes they are a little uncomfortable when starting something new.  Good.  Some things take time to get the hang of.  Good.  Persistence, patience, discipline and adaptation are extremely important skills in life.  We want them to have experience in overcoming obstacles they grow.

Remind yourself and them that we each have our OWN thing.  Whatever that is for you or your loved ones, empower yourself and others to do their thing.  Do it well.  Learn from mistakes without fear.  Allow yourself and your kids to make mistakes in areas that are benign.  Like playing a song they learned in music lessons.  You have other, bigger things to consider and plan for.  Let nature do the work that we can not do by opening the door to new experiences for yourself and your family.

Coming Together For The Holidays..

October through January…we pack in those holidays, don’t we? Halloween. Thanksgiving. Christmas. New Year.

Halloween…eh. You can probably get by without gathering your family together.

Thanksgiving, though? It’s a lot less likely. You are GOING to see them. They may come from near. They may come from far. You may already see them every single week, or it could be that this one day out of the year is the only time you see them.

For some of you, gathering around a table with your relatives this Thanksgiving is going to be…JOYFUL.

For others of you, gathering around a table with your relatives this Thanksgiving is going to be…AWKWARD.

Still for others, gathering around a table with your relatives this Thanksgiving is going to be…PAINFUL.

I’m here to tell you, that as I PERSONALLY head into the holiday season…gathering around a table with my relatives is going to be…ALL OF THOSE THINGS.

Envision with me, if you will, all of the things that could make a Thanksgiving With Family “joyful”? Children, good food, good health, relatives you actually like/enjoy, a cozy warm house to gather in? I’ve got all those things.

Now also envision with me, if you will, all of the things you can imagine…maybe even think about MOVIES you’ve seen that depict it….that could make a Thanksgiving With Family awkward or painful. Divorce? Illness? Addiction? Hard feelings between one or more members of the family? Loss? Differing political views? Hard feelings between one or more members of the family? (Oh, I already said that one? Sorry. But let’s get real…even more than divorce, illness, addiction or loss, that’s the one that makes everyone feel the MOST tense and uncomfortable, reaching for a glass of wine at Thanksgiving, #amiright?) Drama and trauma and REAL hurt. I’ve got all those things.

And yet…I love Thanksgiving. I’m thankful, I want to reflect on that, and I want my children to do the same.

Remember That Everyone Has A Story:

EVERYONE at your table has a story. They are all living out SOME sort of story. Take the time to hear it. Care about it. Understand it. Gain perspective from it. Recognize that they are a byproduct of the story they are living. Taking the time to listen will a) inevitably make for a more interesting Thanksgiving and b) allow you to see that person through different (possibly more gracious) eyes

Enjoy The Simple Pleasures:

Don’t wolf your pie down, (goal: get outta this place as quickly as possible). Savor every single bite of it, and enjoy it with a hot cup of coffee. Soak in the laugh of the little one sitting across from you. I know this sounds so corny, but I’m telling you…there is a lot of joy to be gained in Simple Pleasures.

Help the Little Ones Make Their Memories:

Some of my very best memories as a child are of holidays spent with extended family…cousins, aunts, uncles, great-grandparents…the whole crew. Kids are typically blissfully unaware of the complexities the adults may be facing, at family gatherings. Allow them a beautiful, precious, uncomplicated, untarnished, magical time building ties and bonds and memories that will last them a lifetime.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Explore… in Cooler Weather

We love spending time outside, when it’s NOT 1000 degrees, to enjoy the beauty of Central Texas.  Try opening up the map this weekend and choose a new destination for some outdoor fun.  There’s a great app called “alltrails” that can help.  We like to pack a lunch, lots of different sports balls, frisbees and a v-ball net.  Then, head out to one of our amazing parks within an hour driving time.  Such a great and easy way to make special memories with family.  Simple activity choices create the best opportunities for bonding with loved ones.  It doesn’t have to be a big production.
Some of the places we have visited this year include Jacob’s Well, Blue Hole Wimberley, Tejas Park, Hamilton Pool, Mother Neff State Park, Pedernales Falls, the original Salt Lick in Driftwood, Inks Lake, saw the Congress Ave bridge Bats, and Balcones Nature Preserve to name a few.  As we break out of the hot summer, it is the very best time to explore our area’s natural beauty.

Oh, it’s ON like Donkey Kong
Face it.  We are in a battle for our kids’ attention.  When we were kids it was Donkey Kong, Space Invaders and Pac Man.  Fortunately, we left those games at the arcade.  When I was a kid, I wanted to be a rock star.  Most kids we ask say they want to be YouTube stars.  Hey, there can be big money in both,  Of course, money isn’t everything.  And, the odds are low.  Yet, knowing how to play a song is something that we can truly own.  For life, if we wish.
As parents, our best practice is to give them a chance to try new things.  Soon, they will find what makes them feel good; like a confident and important individual.  The phases of growing up can be tough no matter what is happening around us.  It can be scary out there for our youngsters. If we can help you or your student(s) find that activity that brings them joy, it would truly be an honor.

Our Pet of The Month:
Frannie is in her golden years, and she enjoys licking her dad’s face. This makes her mom giggle. Her owner is piano lover and HitMaker student, Will C.
Frannie is famous in the neighborhood for having the most velvety ears and sneezing emphatically in others’ faces.

Halloween Recital: Saturday, October 26th @ 7pm

MARCH, 2018 – HitMaker Music School Cedar Park

We are rounding out 1/2 of a year at our new location, 2301 Bagdad Rd, Ste 401, Cedar Park, TX 78613.  We are right next to Leander High School’s sports stadium.  Now that we have 8 rooms, there are almost 20 teachers working with students each week!  We are adding more instructors and students every month.  Since January we have added over 50 new students:

Why is everyone interested in taking music lessons?

The study of music is a study of multiple disciplines combined to form the language that we all understand and have a connection to.  Here are some of the tangible areas of value:

Science: Music is a combination of notes.  Notes are vibrations.  We typically tune to “A – 440.”  That literally means the we are hearing 440 vibrations per second.  If you could pound the dashboard 440 times per second you would hear the note A, below middle C, ringing from the dash.  Interestingly, Earth’s gravity plays a big roll in how music is heard.  What does David Bowie sound like on the Moon?

Math: Music is rhythmic, rhythm is a repetitive beat that requires counting and counting is math.  Musicians have to sub divide the count to create rhythm.  The simple math is 4 quarter notes, 8 eighth note and 16 sixteenth notes per measure of 4/4 time.  “4/4” means four quarter notes.  Since math is infinite so are the time signatures.  But we usually see 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 or 6/8 time.

Language: The composer, conductor, musicians and arrangers all need to be speaking the same language on and off the paper to communicate well.  We have to learn reading, writing, aural translation, and listening skills in music lessons just like we do in English 101.  We haven’t even mentioned the emotional language that is inherent of that special song(s).

History: Music is a reflective time capsule of the history of the world.  It must be well preserved as it maps our course through time and helps future generations understand these moments in time intimately.  The feelings and thoughts of countless generations is contained in the music.  What makes it more exciting is that it can be reproduced and reinterpreted by the musician.  Essentially, immortalizing the ideals and the composers themselves.

Phys. Ed: Playing and singing music requires intense coordination of fingers, hands, arms, control of facial muscles, breathing, the diaphragm, back, posture, all while concentrating on the music itself.  If you have ever played an instrument or sang, you know that there is a lot going on both physically and mentally.  The amount of energy required to play any instrument or especially singing, is far greater than most may realize.

Art: Music is expression.  One person can play or sing a song one way and the next person interprets the same song differently.  The musician is drawing from his/her own history, their life experiences, past musical influences, the human condition.  We, the listener, can learn so much from music in the same way a good book teaches.  Music helps us to understand each other in a way that our spoken languages can not.  It affords us the freedom to express the circumstances and commonalities of all people.  Truly, music is a great gift.

Our mission is to be the best music school in the area.  Request info: 512-549-2454

This year has been pretty fun, so far.  We have had a lot of students earn their first Musical Ladder wristbands and Trophies.  Students set goals with their teacher in music lessons and then test to earn awards.  It is a fun way to help students make progress in their music lessons.  Since we had moved to our location in Cedar Park, there has been a flood of new students coming to sign up for piano lesson, guitar lessons, voice, drum lessons, bass, banjo, flute, mandolin and more.  We are truly grateful for the opportunity to serve the community in this way.

This month we will have our first recital of the year.  On February 10th, students will take the stage to perform music from a wide range of genres and decades.  Some of the student will be playing in our “rock band” this recital. We had practice a couple weekends to prepare for the performance.

Then, on February 23rd we will be performing at the Leander Chamber of Commerce annual business expo.  This is always a great event where can meet with a lot of our friends and friends to be about the mission of carrying the music forward.  We love getting to meet you all and the kids love getting to perform in a public setting.

In the month May, we will also be performing at the Old Town Leander street festival produced by The Leander Chamber of Commerce.  Again, our kids will have a chance to perform in a real concert at a public event.  So many performance opportunities – that is why we are HitMakers!

Our students come to us from Austin, Cedar Park, Leander, Liberty Hill, Georgetown, and Round Rock, thanks to our convenient location.

JANUARY, 2018 – HitMaker Music School Newsletter

Say hello to 2018! We have seen a lot of growth in the past couple years. Now, our music school has 8 private rooms to help accommodate the student load. Many thanks to all of the great students and families who believe in investment time and resources into music, as a lifelong skill.  You’re our kind of people because you never know.  A student who learns how to play guitar this year may end up becoming a HITMAKER for real on the billboard music charts.  Or, he may just enjoy being able to have the outlet of music to call on for a good feeling and joyful activity.  Everyone at HitMaker Music School believes in the joy of music and the joy of passing on the skill.  That is why we are the area’s best music school.  We love what we do!

We are all trying to help our kids discover what they enjoy or love doing. Maybe even trying to find their passion.  How can we help our son or daughter through enrichment activities.  Sports, music lessons, dance, cheer, marching band, karate, and the list goes on.  “If he could find something that he loves to do…”  It’s a struggle sometimes because kids are constantly changing in just about every way.  Think about how much your kids have changed in the last 5 years… then, ask yourself how much you have changed.  The point is, kids are growing at a much fast tempo than us adults.

In private music lessons, the student and the instructor work at a pace that is suitable and begin building skills and fundamental knowledge of music.  It’s true that we all have musical ability, albeit in varying degrees.  Even if you’re not a player, pretty much everyone enjoys music, listens to it on a daily basis and has emotional attachment to certain songs from their past and present.

So, how do you know you should start taking music lessons?

  1. Do your kids show an interest in music?  Ask them.  If they say yes, you are welcome to bring them over to tour our studios and see if it clicks.  They may already “know” that they want to play guitar or piano or…
  2. Are they being exposed to a variety of music genres?  Try digging up the music on Youtube and see what they like.  Does anyone inspire them?  Ask what parts they like best in the song.
  3. Not sure? Start with piano.  If your kids are not sure where to start, we would recommend piano lessons.  Making sound on the piano (or keyboard) is easy from the beginning and students will learn the foundations of music, a skill that could be used to play any instrument.  Plus, piano lessons can begin at a younger age.  We recommend ages 6 and up.  Pst, we also have a number of adult students.

Thanksgiving:

We couldn’t be more grateful for the opportunity to serve our communities with music lessons.  Thanksgiving is everyday for us (sans the turkey).

How does music help us and our families?

“I dropped my backpack by the door, ran upstairs and sat down at the piano. I wanted a snack, but first I had to play music. As my fingers connected with the keys, the music filled the air and my thoughts untangled. I thought about my math test and an upcoming research paper. I remembered the fight with my friend and how we resolved it in the hallway. My shoulders dropped. My eyes focused on the written music, my brain lit up, and I felt relaxed. I pivoted on the bench and said, “Mom? I need to tell you about my day!””

Music has a unique ability to connect with our souls, bring peace, and untangle the most stressful day. Musicians will all agree that something amazing happens when they are making music–it’s a little like magic.

Kids in school get better grades when they also study music. Music lights up the creative side of the brain and allows a creative outlet that brings calm and peace to crazy schedules and filled-up calendars.

Kids who meet with their instructor once a week find a powerful mentor relationship: teaching, encouraging, leading, guiding. Encouragement is the best motivator and our teachers pour it out liberally!

Kids who perform on stage feel a sense of accomplishment and pride that will follow them throughout life. They discover how to be nervous (and a little scared) and how to get on stage and perform anyway. The sense of accomplishment is off the charts and you’ll see their faces beam with pride as they exit the stage. This confidence carries into many areas of life. Students realize that nervousness can be conquered and the reward for “doing it anyway” is something to be championed!

Music is so much more than learning an instrument! It teaches a love for the arts, a connection to something extremely powerful, and a way to express thought and emotions. Music gives students confidence and a sense of accomplishment!

Parents, thank you for giving your child the gift of music! If you’re a musician, I hope you’re in lessons, too! There’s nothing better than sitting down to make music after a full, crazy day.

Music is powerful and amazing and we are so blessed to bring incredible teachers and off-the-charts students together.
